Clarify the Complex

How to build a skyscraper

a skyscraper is a building with at least 150 metres of height. a skyscraper with more of an altitude of 300 metres is known as a super-tall skyscraper. and a skyscraper with more of a height of 600 m of height is known as a mega tall skyscraper.

A very simplified how skyscrapers are put together.

A steel skeleton structure is built to distribute the weight across the vertical beams that support the structure.  and to distribute the weight evenly. to support the structure.

metal beams are riveted end to end to from vertical columns. at each floor level vertical beams are connected to horizontal beams.

after the steel skeleton is built, concrete is poured glueing it together.

and using cranes the structure is built up to the spire.

After the steel skeleton is made, then the floors are paved and then adding essential services like water, wiring and painting are done.

skyscraper design

skyscrapers need to combat natures forces such as gravity, heavy winds and storms, etc.  the hurdles put forward by nature can be overcame by using methods of engineering and creative designs. for example the shanghai tower In china is built twisted to confuse the incoming winds.

Generally a skyscraper can cost up to $300 million to $1 Billion to build and furnish. the height, floors, location, subtractor work and cost of land will also factor in the total cost.

Initial ideas

For my first ideas I wanted to make an infographic poster/s about how to build a skyscraper. my ideas is to illustrate an unfinished skyscraper being built. I wanted to show a very simplified step by step guide for the skyscraper and also have a simplified style for the buildings.

I chose two of my favourite ideas and develop them more by using colour. I wanted them to look unfinished so its like looking at an x-ray of a skyscraper.

Development

to start with I wanted to create only two posters, one stacked on top of the other. however as skyscrapers are tall this didn't have the effect I would have wanted. so I then decided to create four posters showing the process of an unfinished skyscraper.

I wanted to use photoshop to try and use a blueprint effect however this wasn't as effective as I wanted it to be. so I decided to go and refine the image instead.

I scanned in my origional images and used photoshop to edit the image. I decided to then go back and add detail for the final images.

I used levels to up the contrast on the images, this should refine the images more. I also decided to use a typewriter font add a more authentic feel. I also scanned in paper under the images to make a home made text box.
